Amy Winehouse’s death : Cause, reactions and pictures

Amy Winehouse may have been dead for six hours before her body was found lying in bed by a security staffer. Prior to Amy Winehouse’s death, the singer, whose struggles with substances had been well-documented in the press, both British and beyond, had visited her doctor. According to The Sun, Winehouse had just seen her doctor the night before she passed away, and that he “was happy with her condition. When he left on Friday night he had no concerns. Less than 24 hours later she was found dead … Amy’s health has been very fragile and she has been having a series of check-ups.”

Earlier, Sunday tabloids in the UK claimed Winehouse was seen buying drugs from a dealer in Camden just after 10.30pm. It was claimed she bought narcotics including cocaine, ecstasy and ketamine. But the singer’s family labelled the claims “nonsense”, The Sun reported.

Amy’s father Mitch, who famously predicted she would die if she failed to quit drink and drugs, said he was devastated by her death but has vowed not to crack up for Amy’s sake. On a jazz tour in New York, Mr Winehouse said: “I’m coming home. I have to be with Amy. I can’t crack up for her sake. My family need me.”

The Winehouse’s, which include Amy’s mother Janis, her father and her brother Alex, said in their press release, “Our family has been left bereft by the loss of Amy, a wonderful daughter, sister, niece. She leaves a gaping hole in our lives.”

The Winehouse family statement continued, “We are coming together to remember her and we would appreciate some privacy and space at this terrible time.”

Reg Traviss, who had previously turned down a marriage proposal from the singer, was desperate to help Winehouse turn her life around, friends said. In March, Traviss said: “We’ve been together nearly a year now and we’re very happy. Amy’s doing well, she’s fine. She’s healthy and happy.” When he realised Amy Winehouse could not beat her demons, Traviss ended the relationship.

In an interview last October with Harper’s Bazaar magazine, Amy Winehouse was asked if she was happy. She replied: “I don’t know what you mean. I’ve got a very nice boyfriend. He’s very good to me.” And, asked if she had any unfulfilled ambitions, Amy replied: “Nope! If I died tomorrow, I would be a happy girl.”
